Playable Google Doodle celebrates Frank Zambonis birthday

first_imgIt’s been a while since Google offered us a new Google Doodle that took the form of a game, but today we get one that includes a Zamboni. The Doodle is in celebration of what would have been Frank Zamboni’s 112th birthday, and while you may not of heard of the man himself, his last name is sure to be familiar. In 1940, Frank and his brother opened an ice rink in Los Angeles. Having run an ice making business previously, they had all the refrigeration equipment they needed and an expertise in dealing with the cold stuff. That lead to two very important breakthroughs in the world of ice rinks. The first, patented in 1946, was a method of eliminating ripples in the ice rink ice due to the pipes that lay underneath it to keep it frozen. The second, developed in 1949 and patented in 1953, was an ice resurfacer, which ended up being called a Zamboni. Before the Zamboni it took 3 people 90 minutes to smooth out an ice rink. But with the new machine a single person could do it in 10 minutes.Google has used the Zamboni as the basis for the Doodle game. You take control of one, with the aim being to resurface the ice after a number of skaters have used it. The main hurdle to your continued progression is an ever diminishing level of fuel, but you can top up the tank by collecting the fuel cans skaters occasionally drop. Also, watch out for obstacles on the ice and the odd banana that makes you spin. It’s a fitting tribute to a man and machine that continues to be an important invention. It’s also a pretty good game you could lose a good chunk of time playing today.Play the Frank Zamboni Google Doodle and let us know what you scoredlast_img read more
